Abstract

Reading literature either in English or ethnic literature which is written in
English becomes one of the most challenging tasks for EFL students. It relates closely to
their ability not only to read, understand, and to master the language, but also to gain
interest and appreciation towards literacy texts. In contrast, most of EFL students especially
Indonesian still encounter problem in learning it, although many techniques are regarded
as having significant potential in addressing this problem. Thus, the study comprehensively
determines the secondary students’ attitudes on learning literature in EFL classroom.
Descriptive study was employed where the data taken from questionnaire which was
administered to 127 students in two secondary schools in West Sumatra. The survey
conducted has shown that majority of EFL students have positive attitudes towards
literature. Thus, the teachers should identify suitable teaching techniques that could help
in motivating the students to participate in the classroom activity. In other word, they will
love for literacy works, and develop attitude and respond effectively towards the literacy
works.
