This paper aims to examine women and their pace in Minangkabau in the two
great Minangkabau scholars’s opinion, Shekh Abdul Laṭīf Shakūr in the al Mu’ashārah and
Haji Abdul Karīm Amrullāh in the Cermin Terus. Disclosure of thoughts on the two works
uses hermineutic methods. Based on textual analysis of the both text, it was found that
they differed in terms of technical matters such as the way to women’s dress and could
have a career. Haji Abdul Karīm Amrullāh refused women to be westernized dressed and
forbade women to work outside his home while Shekh Abdul Laṭīf Shakūr was more
flexible in terms of Islamic dress. However, substantively such as female courtesy, women's
rights and obligations in the family, both agreed to be in accordance with the Qur'an and
sunnah. In essence, they want to change the mindset of Minangkabau women who are
bound by adat and the matrilineal system.
